Cruising the Adriatic July 5 to July 7

Out of Split on a boat! We are on the MY Arca. We found the boat on the day we arrived so we knew what we were up against. Our hotel isn’t too far but it’s too hot to schlep. We were going to take the bus but a cab took us for €10, not too much more than the bus and we didn’t have to walk too far.

It’s a nice boat, definitely an upgrade from our live-aboard in the Seychelles. Our boat is moored to the dock but there are three others moored beside us. Thank goodness, moving the bags around boat gangways and passages would be brutal.

Our itinerary takes us to several islands, here is the map. We have guided tours included in each town and excursions to other sights (ie. waterfalls) included as well.

Croatia has been under several different ancient empires, Greek, Roman, Venetian to name a few. Not to go into too much detail, we are learning a lot about Adriatic history.

July 5. Split has quite a history of its own. Diocletian, a Roman emperor was born in Dalmatia and made Split his retirement residence. He was the only Roman emperor to abdicate. He also split the empire into two parts. His palace was right on the water and was very large. Some of it still remains as it was built in the 4th century.

July 6, after our first day at sea, Trogir. Not too far from Split but very historical and a UNESCO world heritage site. Trogir is very old and the main town is actually on an island. It has Roman history back to the 4th century BC, as do many of the places we will visit here.

July 7. Onward from Trogir to Vis. We were supposed to go to the blue cave but the wind is up and the captain has decided it is not safe to go. Vis is very pretty, and not too busy. It is a bit out of the way. It is the furthest island from the Croatian coast.

They have wineries on most of the islands and grow some very indigenous grape varieties. Posip, Grasevina and Plavac Mali. We walked up to a winery in one of the old tunnels (there are a lot of tunnels mostly used during various wars). Jane was not a fan of the Rose but we enjoyed the white and red. It is hot here so the red had an alcohol content of 14.9%.

We have discovered that the have an interesting way of parking bots here. Most of them are similar in size, just different configurations. Check it out!
